What is OLED technology and what does it mean for you?

Panels that are made of OLED are constructed from organic materials. The panels light up when electricity is applied and since they don’t require any type of filter or backlight like LEDs, they are thinner, more flexible and much more efficient. They offer a distinctive picture quality with brilliant colours.

Modern OL EDs have become even more durable and efficient lately since they are constructed using more layers. While the basic functionality stays the same, they are becoming more robust as each year passes.

The back plane of an OLED display is quite similar to an LCD display while the front plane remains unique to OLEDs. Most OLED displays on the market these days have been made using a Shadow Mask along with vacuum evaporation.

The Amoled is the most common driving method of an OLED display and it uses storage capacitors and TFT array, making this type of design more complicated to construct. They are commonly found in TVs, tablets and smart phones and today’s leading producer of AMOLEDs is Samsung. This company currently makes approximately 400 million displays per year.

Other companies in the OLED lighting market include LG Display, Philips/OLED Works and Konica Minolta. These companies are shipping these panels and while the prices remain high, production capacity is quite low. Although i. this day of ever-changing technology, that could change rather quickly.
